Before you even begin to place your gear into your basement studio, there’s usually one main concern that a musicians has; how do I keep the sound from disturbing everyone else in the house. Of course, it works the other way too in that you want the sound of people walking and televisions blaring from disturbing you as well. The answer is you have to beef up your isolation, and unfortunately it’s one of the more expensive aspects of building any kind of a studio. The reason? Isolation comes from a combination of construction techniques and plain old mass. That means that the thicker you make the walls and ceiling, the less likely you’ll have anyone complaining about your Marshall cranked up to 11.
