Tabs, then a three day weekend!
- Grooveshark recently had their app pulled from Apple’s app store because of complaints raised by UMG’s UK arm, and anybody expecting a smooth resolution to this debate ought to get a second opinion. Universal has, in the words one staffer there, declared a “jihad” on the music service. “They want blood,” this person told Digital Music News. Yikes!
- Long-tail music people everywhere, rejoice! The Ted Cohen-approved recommendation engine Echo Nest has partnered with 7Digital, a digital music store that offers its 10 million song catalog to 32 territories in Europe. Hopefully this means more sales for everybody.
- Apparently politicians aren’t the only folks out there incapable of getting their ducks in a row before using artists’ music. The iconic funk band War is suing Pepsi for $10 million for using “Why Can’t We Be Friends” without their permission in a recent television spot.
- Apple’s recent announcement that they’d be expanding iTunes Music Store song previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds was met with great enthusiasm by everybody…except the National Music Publishers Association, who want to new licenses negotiated before they sign off on the change.
- Finally, if you were wondering when an iconic musician not named Dr. Dre or Steve Aoki would attach his name to a pair of really expensive headphones, wait no further: Quincy Jones is releasing his own line of AKG headphones through Harman. There will be three different kinds, and they’ll range in price from $149 to $499.
