The Valentine’s edition of the Morning Tabs feature the fruits of Music Hack Day NYC, the finalists at SXSW Accelerator, Pandora’s hopes of going public, and the return of The Cynical Musician.

  • We were all excited to attend Music Hack Day NYC this weekend, but illness forced us to stay home. Thankfully, some of our pals in this space did check it out, so here are two recaps for you, one from, and another from Indie Music Tech.
  • And while we’re on the subject of technology, we might as well let you know that SXSW Accelerator, a kind of tech showcase presented by Microsoft’s BizSpark, has announced its music tech finalists. Judging by the field, we’d place a bet on Next Big Sound completing a threepeat; Alex White’s startup has already won awards from Billboard and MIDEM.
  • The Cynical Musician is back! The music industry blog run by heavy metal bassist Faza published its first post in months yesterday, and we’re thrilled. We’d guess that personal changes were the reason for Faza’s months-long silence (dude just moved to England), but whatever the reason, we hope he gets back to regularly scheduled programming/thinking.
  • Big-time digital broadcaster/radio site Pandora is readying a very big IPO. How big? Like $100 million, which happens to be roughly equivalent to the amount of royalties they’ve paid out to rights holders since 2007. As the article indicates, there is some evidence that Pandora is getting very, very close to turning a profit, and because of how thoroughly it dominates its market, profitability could be right around the corner.
