At music industry conferences, purely actionable information is sometimes hard to come by. Unless you’re listening to someone who’s in the business of providing interesting stats (Eric Garland, say, or Jim Lucchese), the odds that a panelist will offer up clear tips, useful insights, or anything else resembling a brass tack are kind of long.

Like so many other successful endeavors, Songwriters on Process began as something very different.

Created by former English professor Ben Opipari, Songwriters on Process was once devoted to the craft of writing in general, and it had a uniquely athletic bent.  “[The original site] focused on the connection between writing, creativity and exercise,” Opipari explains. “I’m a big runner. I ran track in college, and I’m big into lifting weights, and I noticed there was this connection. Whenever I’d go for a run, I’d come back with all these great writing ideas. As we’ve explained before, there are advantages to writing and releasing songs about current topics: Christmas songs, songs about natural disasters, songs about political figures, even songs about stupid crap in the news can go a long way toward expanding your fan base and adding a new dimension to your brand.

We love a good video series as much as the next guy, so allow us to get a little bit geeked about the prospect of the ASCAP Lesson series, in which ASCAP grabs members of its star-studded roster for inspirational lessons about the craft of songwriting.

We have to admit, we expected the production values to be just a smidge higher, but hey, when you’ve got Wendy and Lisa, who have been writing together for a quarter century, you’re well within your rights just pointing a camera at them and getting out of the way.
