The days of party music dictators and despots are over!
In an effort to bring democracy to your next house party, SongVote.com brings users a collaborative playlist tool. It works like an open election for picking music at social gatherings. Users set up an event, select a song, and then invite friends to participate via Facebook or e-mail. Participants submit songs and vote on the submissions of others until a playlist based on equal representation is established.
Aside from the party-related fun, there are potential practical uses for musicians. Hypebot notes that bands could use SongVote to determine which of their songs fans like best, or what song to cover in their next show.
Overall, it sounds like a good time. There are, however, two potential shortcomings:
- SongVote sets up the playlist according to how many votes a song gets. This might not lead to the most party-friendly list. All the smash hits could come at the beginning of the fiesta, leaving less popular tunes for later in the night.
- There’s no feature that prevents an overthrow of the democratic playlist. A guest with unfortunate music taste could easily stage a coup and rule over the party music with an iron fist! It seems that some defenses would be necessary to maintain a peaceful music democracy.
